Radiology is the use of radiant energy, such as x-rays, in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Today, radiation is used not only to produce interior images of the body to diagnose illness and injury but also in the treatment of diseases such as cancer. With x-rays, dense objects such as bones can be seen clearly, but soft tissue cannot. Now that computerized scanners work with millions of messages from a single test, it is possible to view soft tissues and organs like the brain or heart. Imaging techniques do not always involve radiation. Examples of imaging equipment that do not use x-rays include ultrasound, which uses sound waves, and the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, which uses radio waves.
